Grants of up to $19,000 to Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania health information organizations for outreach projects that improve health workers’ and clinicians' access to health and biomedical information. Eligible projects promote knowledge of available resources and emphasize those produced by the NLM.
Description of Award:
The goal of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) is to advance the progress of medicine, improve public health by providing U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information, and improve individuals' access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health. The NNLM is vital in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) outreach efforts to health professionals and the public to increase awareness of, facilitate access to, and provide training in the use of NLM's web-based information resources
The purpose of the Clinical and Public Health Outreach Award is to support projects that enhance clinicians’ and public health workers’ abilities to find and use biomedical and health information in practice and for patient education. Outreach should expand knowledge of health and science information resources, with an emphasis on those produced by the National Library of Medicine.
Awards to NNLM MAR members help achieve two National Network Performance Measures:
-Engage Network members in carrying out the mission of NNLM.
-Maintain a robust outreach and education program reaching the region’s communities and responsive to their needs.
Projects are encouraged that incorporate one or more of the following:
-Increase awareness of and skills for locating high quality biomedical and health information
-Increase awareness and training to promote quality consumer health resources to patients and families
-Encourage partnerships between libraries, health care professionals, public health workers, local community groups and other key groups to reach underserved populations
-Incorporate or improve technology to ensure access to high quality health information, with a special emphasis on the “under-connected,” particularly in inner city and rural health organizations
Projects may include the following (other creative ideas are encouraged):
-Evaluating health information and training needs of a target audience, and implementing a training plan to the target audience
-Installation of interactive patient education kiosks
-Development of a local health information outreach plan that includes site visits, presentations and/or health fair tables that target area clinical and/or public health professionals or patients
-Integration of National Library of Medicine resources into formal continuing education curricula, such as a Community Health Worker training program
-Integration of NLM resources into a program preparing college students to enter health occupations
-Purchase of technology to provide health information delivery at patients’ homes or in emergency settings
-Implementation and evaluation of Clinical eCompanion or MedlinePlus Connect in a clinical setting
All projects must incorporate one or more National Library of Medicine resources, such as:
-Genetics Home Reference

-Consultant Costs (hourly rate)
