Grants of up to $25,000 to Virginia nonprofit organizations in eligible locations to support programming and general operations. Applicants must submit an LOI prior to applying. Funding is intended to assist organizations that strengthen local communities and enhance the quality of life of residents in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, and Rappahannock Counties.

The grant award provides unrestricted funding to help organizations with on-going or emergent needs. The grant awards may fund a specific program or project in which needs are immediate in nature and address or alleviate hardship. The Foundation encourages collaborative proposals that build and develop community resources and partnerships. 

Grants may be used to:

  • Help sustain successful existing programs;
  • Scale-up existing programs in the number/areas served;
  • Make quality improvements to existing programs;
  • Start new programs; or
  • Make purchases for needed equipment, supplies, or training

Programs include those that:

  • Improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities, particularly in the areas of basic human needs;
  • Address disparities and increase opportunities for historically underserved people and communities;
  • Preserve and increase access to unique community assets;
  • Meaningfully engages the voices, perspectives, and expertise of the people and communities that represent their program participants;
  • Promote broad-based participation in arts and cultural activities;
  • Improve a student’s readiness to learn, and ability to succeed in school and other educational endeavors;
  • Enhance wellness through community-based organizations; and
  • Encourage environmental preservation and support.

Award amounts generally range from $5,000 to $25,000

Term of Contract:

Funds should be expended within 12 months of the award.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Community Assistance Grant program invites proposals for projects from 501(c)(3) nonprofits that have been in operation for at least three years, and that deliver services within Fauquier, Rappahannock, and Northern Culpeper counties.

Priority consideration will be given to nonprofits demonstrating strong management and a proven track record of accomplishments.

Not funded:
- Organizations not tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code
- Organizations that discriminate with regard to age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, national origin, religious affiliation, or presence of a disability
- Individuals (except scholarships)
- Fundraising events (such as tickets, raffles, auctions or tournaments), annual fundraising appeals, or agency celebrations
- Ongoing operating support
- Political activities
- Religious organizations when funds would be used in whole or in part to further the organization's religious purposes
- Existing obligations, debts/liabilities or costs that the agency has already incurred
- Scholarly research
- National or international organizations, that cannot demonstrate an established local presence benefiting Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, or Rappahannock Counties
- Projects normally the responsibility of government
- Private primary or secondary schools or academies
- Capital campaigns or other requests in which NPCF’s funds will not be expended within 12 months after the award

- Applications close: February 8, 2021

Interested applicants are requested to submit by email a Letter of Inquiry (LOI), which provides preliminary information on the organization requesting funding. Grants are awarded in the same manner as Unrestricted Grants.
